2007 Scintilla Forum to instill the spirit of healthy competition among regional colleges

NEW PALTZ — The School of Science and Engineering at the State University of New York at New Paltz will host the 2007 Scintilla Forum, an annual regional collegiate competition where undergraduate and graduate level college students present their projects from the fields of engineering, technology, computer science, information systems and business from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 5, in Lecture Center 108.

At the event, 15 teams consisting of college students and their faculty advisors representing academic institutions from throughout the Mid-Hudson region will give 10 minute presentations. A maximum of two presentations from each institution will be accepted. A distinguished panel of judges consisting of technical, business, recruiting managers and high level executives from industry, local government and academia will review each presentation.

The schools attending this year’s Scintilla Forum are: SUNY New Paltz; Dutchess Community College; Marist College; Vassar College; Mount St. Mary College; U.S. Military Academy; and Bard College. In addition, Irene MacPherson, the marketing director of the Ulster County Development Corporation, will be the guest of honor at the event.

The projects presented at Scintilla are a part of, but not limited to, the existing course requirements for the students of the participating colleges. The Scintilla Forum provides the attendees at the event the opportunity to meet the best and brightest students of the Mid-Hudson region, to give their input on future project ideas for the colleges, and network with peers from industry.

The overarching goal of the Scintilla Forum is to instill the spirit of healthy competition among students, to help fuel their motivation and energy for creativity, and to create a win-win situation for all participants including the academic institutions, the students and the high-tech companies of the Mid-Hudson region.
