Hawks Sweep Bears, 8-5 and 13-5; DiTrapani Hits Grand Slam

POTSDAM, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team traveled to Potsdam this afternoon for a SUNYAC doubleheader and swept the Bears, 8-5 and 13-5 (in five innings). The Hawks advance to 13-17 on the season and 6-8 in conference play.
In game one, the Hawks trailed 5-0 heading into the fourth inning. With bases loaded, junior Amalia DiTrapani stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam to bring the Hawks to within one. New Paltz scored four runs in the sixth inning to secure the win, including a two-run double by DiTrapani who finished with six RBIs. Junior Kelly O’Hea earned the win on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts in a complete game.
In the nightcap, Potsdam scored three runs in the first inning before the Hawks used the momentum from the first game to score five runs in the bottom of the inning. The Bears made it 5-4 in the second, but the Hawks responded with three runs in the third. With New Paltz leading 8-5 heading into the fifth, the Hawks scored five runs to end the game in five innings. DiTrapani finished with three hits, including an RBI double. Senior Amy O’Brien hammered a three-run home run and first year Elizabeth May had a two-run triple, as the Hawks totaled 16 hits. Junior Michelle Reinke earned the win from the pitchers circle, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. Junior Joelle Von Bischoffshausen, threw one inning and allowed three runs on one hit, with two walks and one strikeout.
New Paltz will return to action on Saturday when they host Buffalo State in a SUNYAC doubleheader at 11 am, followed by a doubleheader with SUNYIT at 3 pm. Sunday, the Hawks will host Fredonia at 12 noon.
