Fitzpatrick Hits Homer in 6-2 Win; Hawks Fall 11-0

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team hosted the Union Dutchwomen this afternoon in a non-conference match-up and claimed a 6-2 victory before falling 11-0 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Erin Fitzpatrick hit a walk off homerun to start the first inning. Fitzpatrick’s homerun is the first homerun by a New Paltz player hit on the current softball field. Union tied the game in the fourth with a homerun by Megan Kaknis. The Hawks tallied two runs in the bottom of the inning. Melyssa Cilmi hit an RBI double to center field, and Gina Marano hit an RBI single down the right field line. The Dutchwomen scored their second run in the sixth inning on a Lindsay Larabee RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, New Paltz had a runner on a second and third with two outs when senior Amy O’Brien hit a two RBI single. Fitzpatrick singled to scored O’Brien.
Kelly O’Hea tossed a complete game, allowing nine hits, two runs and striking out two. Fitzpatrick went three for four from the plate and Cilmi and Christina Charvat each recorded two hits.
Union took full control of the second game, allowing only three hits by New Paltz. Lauren Motzkin, Dale Cornelius and O’Brien each tallied a hit for the Hawks. Michelle Reinke took the loss on the mound, allowing 12 hits, 11 runs, two walks and striking out three.
New Paltz will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Russell Sage at 3 p.m.
