Men’s & Women’s Swim Teams Sweep Oneonta, Coombs Makes National Cut in Three Events
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swim teams swept Oneonta this afternoon in their first home meet of the year. The men’s team defeated the Red Dragons by a score of 111-88, while the women got the win with a score of 120-79.
Both teams took first place in the 400 medley relay, with the men’s relay team of Stephen Cozzolongo, Danny Lo, Mark Chipman, and Joe Fails touched first with a time of 3:48.79. The women’s relay team of Michelle Coombs, Joelle Hopf, Liz Ruggiero, and Regina Davide beat out the field with a time of 4:08.91.
Stefan Crain and Kevin Kent took first and second in the 1000 yard freestyle with times of 10.57.52 and 11:20.00, while Zack Lowenstein and Brian Bennett went 1-2 in the 200 free with times of 1:51.79 and 152.97.
The men continued their 1-2 finishes in the 50 free and 200 fly. Brendan Lown (23.47) just beat out teammate Joe Fails (23.49) by 2 hundreths of a second in the 50, while Mark Chipman (2:18.29) and Johnny Fleckenstein (2:19.46) took the fly. New Paltz continued their dominance with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM with Fleckenstein taking first with a time of 206.97, with Cozzolongo taking second, 210.60 and Lo grabbing third 2:15.02.
Fails also took the 100 free with a time of 52.29, while Lowenstein took the 200 backstroke 2:04.19.
On the women’s side, the afternoon belonged to Michelle Coombs and Liz Delia. Coombs made the national cut in the 100 backstroke, the 50 free and the 100 free. Coombs time of 58.64 is a full second under the B cut requirement in the backstroke.
Coombs took first in the 50 free (24.26) while mate Ashley Williamson took second, (25.74). The duo also went 1-2 in the 100 free with times of 53.26 and 57.14 respectively.
Liz Delia took the 1000 yard free, 11:19.55 while teammates Melinda Pullen, 11:47.52, and Christina Corrigan 11:57.54 took second and third. Delia also grabbed the 200 IM, 2:19.04, and the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:18.58, with Katie Rapp taking second, 2:22.56.
Regina Davide and Joelle Hopf went 1-2 in the 200 free 204.36, and 206.13. The women cleaned up 1-2-3 on the 200 fly with Liz Ruggiero (2:18.37) Erica Ellis (2:27.79), and Eryka Eikeseth (2:27.97)
Both teams return to action tomorrow when they travel to Morrisville.
