Women’s Soccer Downed by Fredonia 2-1
FREDONIA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team dropped a conference game on the road to Fredonia this afternoon. The Blue Devils (7-4-1, 4-1-0 SUNYAC) scored twice with the wind at their backs in the first half, and limited New Paltz’s chances in the second half, for a 2-1 SUNYAC win.
Goals by freshman forward Lauren Heilweil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and junior defender Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) staked Fredonia State to a 2-0 halftime lead.
New Paltz countered in the second half on a goal by senior forward Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park/New Hyde Park) in the 52nd minute. Yet the Hawks (4-7-1, 2-4-0 SUNYAC) managed just 10 shots with the wind advantage (to 5 second-half shots by Fredonia State). The Blue Devils had a 22-3 shot advantage in the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Becky Scroger (Spencerport/Spencerport) made four saves while New Paltz sophomore Sarah Boccard (Washingtonville/Washingtonville) had eight stops.
Heilweil opened the scoring with her third goal of the season in the 12th minute when, following a midfield interception, she connected from just outside the 18-yard box. Bleecker then made it 2-0 in the 34th minute with a free-kick from just inside the 18. It was her third goal of the year.
Fliegel’s goal, her first of the season, was a similar-type goal as the one scored by Heilweil. It came from the center-midfield and rode the wind into the top of the net. But the Hawks failed to get off another threatening shot.
The win was Fredonia State’s fifth straight in the series, and the third straight by 2-1 scores over the last two seaons. The Blue Devils lead all-time, 8-4-0.
