Oneonta State Dominates New Paltz, 7-1

ONEONTA, NY — Freshman Kathryn Kubaryk (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) scored a pair of goals to go with one assist in leading Oneonta to a convincing 7-1 win this afternoon in SUNYAC field hockey action. The Red Dragons (4-3/1-1) took control of this one from the opening whistle en route to the lopsided victory against the Hawks, who fell to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference
play.
Oneonta didn’t waste any time in registering its opening goal of the contest. Sophomore Somer Shuffield (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) sent a ball across the circle that found its way through the New Paltz defense to a waiting Megan Flaherty (Fishkill, NY/John Jay), who finished the play with a goal into a wide open goal.
Two more goals by the Red Dragons over the next seven minutes gave them a commanding 3-0 lead. Sophomore Samantha Merritt (Dover, NH/Dover) and freshman Nicole Benscoter (Castle Creek, NY/Whitney Point) tallied for
Oneonta. Benscoter would add a second goal before the end of the first half giving the Red Dragons a 6-0 lead at the break.
Kubaryk made it 7-0 in the 47th minute of play with an assist from sophomore Leslie Aitken (Accord, NY/Rondout Valley).
The Hawks’ lone goal of the game came in the 68th minute unassisted by junior Ashley Smith (Selden, NY/Newfield).
The Hawks play again on Saturday at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, NY where they will take on the SUNY Geneseo Knights in another SUNYAC contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
