New Paltz Stuns Cortland in Double OT 2-1
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team earned a huge SUNYAC conference victory with their first ever win over Cortland this afternoon at Alumni Field. New Paltz was 0-21-1 all time against the Red Dragon’s entering the game.
Cortland got on the board first just six minutes into the contest when sophomore Marie Valentino (Ithaca, NY) lofted a shot over the head of back-up goal keeper Kelly Amendola (Brewster, NY).
Both teams battled for field position and the Red Dragons controlled for most of the contest, until the 81st minute when senior Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) notched her fifth goal of the season. Kelty, who was all over the field, playing sweeper most of the game booted a one-timer to the upper left corner for the goal.
Both teams had opportunities during the extra frame, but the Hawks capitalized with just 14 seconds remaining in the second overtime stanza, Junior Lauren Martel (West Sayville, NY) split two defenders and got a shot off that found the back of the net for the game winner.
Kelly Amendola (Brewster, NY) was fantastic in goal for New Paltz registering 16 saves.
New Paltz returns to action this Wednesday when they host Manhattanville at 4:00pm at Alumni Field.
