Nationally Ranked Thoroughbreds Too Much for Hawks

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team couldn’t pull off the upset of the nationally ranked Skidmore College Thoroughbreds Saturday night at Wachenheim Field. Skidmore scored three goals in the game’s first eight minutes on the way to a 6-2 win over the Hawks.
Mariah Schuette (Littleton, Colo.) scored at 1:44 from Ali Starrett (Athol, Mass.). Just 1:07 later, Schuette assisted on the first of three Katie Weber (Princeton, N.J.) first- half goals.
Shaila DeLea (Cornish, Maine) made it 3-0 at 8:03 and then assisted on Weber’s second goal at 22:23 and again on Weber’s third goal at 25:41, giving the Thoroughbreds a 5-0 lead at the half.
DeLea made it 6-0 from Schuette at 43:15.
New Paltz then scored twice within a minute on goals by Justine Fairclough (Glen Cove, NY) at 44:19 and Ashley Smith (Selden, NY) at 45:19.
Each of Skidmore’s goalies had a single save. Meredith Peeke (Exeter, N.H.) started and Becky Mooar (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Mia Guajardo (Chicago, Ill.) saw action in relief.
Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) had eight saves for New Paltz (1-7).
Skidmore, ranked 16th nationally, is now 7-2. New Paltz returns to action on Thursday, October 6th when the travel to Montclair State for a 7:00pm contest.
