SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Team Dropped By Cortland

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team lost this evening’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game to Cortland, 56-42. The Hawks fall to 3-9 in the SUNYAC and 8-12 overall, while Cortland advances to 12-0 in the SUNYAC and 17-2 overall.

SUNY New Paltz (8-12, 3-8) shot 22.2 percent from the field in the opening period and found themselves trailing 32-17, at the half. Cortland (17-2, 12-0) dominated the court for the first thirty-five minutes of the game, and would maintain their lead thanks to the stellar play of sophomore forward Sara Cavanaugh(Hastings-on-Hudson, NY). Cavanaugh scored 10 points and grabbed 11 boards for the Red Dragons. Senior guard Kaylin VanDusen (Schuyler, NY) recorded 11 points off four-of-ten shooting from the field.

The Red Dragons out shot the Hawks in both halves of play. Cortland shot 42 percent in the game, while SUNY New Paltz shot a mere 26.8 percent from the field. Cortland’s defense proved too much for the Hawks snatching up 44 rebounds, 33 defensively.

SUNY New Paltz sophomore guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) led all Hawks with nine points and four rebounds. Junior guard Kristin Jackson (East Islip, NY) netted eight points, collected five rebounds, and two steals on the evening. Senior Forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) scored eight points in the loss.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team returns to action on Tuesday February 7, when they travel to play St. Joseph’s of Brooklyn at 7:30 pm.
