SUNY New Paltz Women’s Swim Team Wins 2006 RPI Invitational

TROY, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team won the RPI Invitational held this afternoon at Robison Pool. The Hawks compiled 521 points to hold off Cortland by a mere nine-point margin for the victory.

SUNY New Paltz (6-1) senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) led the Hawks with first place finishes in the 50-meter freestyle (24.72), the 100-meter freestyle (54.63) and helped sophomore Regina Davide (Ossining, NY), freshman Erica Ellis (Barneveld, NY) and sophomore Laura Lipp (St. James, NY) capture first place in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:50.28.

Junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY), sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY), junior Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) and Lipp swam to a first place finish in the 400-meter medley relay with a time of 4:11.67. Ruggiero added to SUNY New Paltz’s point total when she touched first in the 200-meter butterfly in 2:16.39. Junior Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) took first place in the 200-meter individual medley (2:18.17) and the 200-meter backstroke (2:16.00). Freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY) finished second in the 500-meter freestyle (5:31.22) and the 200-meter individual medley (2:21.51).

The Hawks held a commanding lead throughout most of the meet with victories in seven of 13 events. Cortland managed a second place finish in the meet with 512 points, while host RPI took a distant third place finish with 360 total team points.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team will travel to Cortland on Saturday, January 28 at 1:00 pm.
