SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Soars Over SUNYAC Champion

BROCKPORT, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team defeated the defending conference champion, Brockport, this evening for the first time since January 31, 1992. The Hawks topped the Golden Eagles by a score of 55-53 at North Tuttle Gymnasium.

Junior guards Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) and Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) joined sophomore forward Sarah Salvo (Manorville, NY) to shoot 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the field. With 4:43 remaining in the contest, Salvo converted a lay up to give SUNY New Paltz (6-7, 2-4) the lead for good. Salvo finished the evening with eight points and seven rebounds. Driscoll led the Hawks with 12 points, on four-of-six shooting from behind the three-point line, while Kelty pitched in nine points, three rebounds, and four assists.

Brockport (6-6, 2-2) held the lead only twice in the affair and entered halftime down, 29-26. The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore forward Kim Schon (Corfu, NY), who topped all scores with 17 points and collected nine rebounds. Junior guard Katie Marcella (Schenectady, NY) registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Courtney Hines (Johnstown, NY) contributed 12 points and four assists.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will host conference rival Oswego this Friday, January 20 at 6:00 pm.
