SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Sweep Stevens Tech

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s and men’s swim teams swept this afternoon’s dual meet against Stevens Tech. The women’s team won 93-78, while the men won 97-87.

The SUNY New Paltz women (5-1) started out on the right foot with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, junior Liz Delia (Oswego, NY), sophomore Laura Lipp (St. James, NY), sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY) and senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) finished in 1:57.73.

Masterson swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.23) and in the 100-yard freestyle (55.30). Sophomore Regina Davide (Ossining, NY) took first in the 50-yard free style with a time of 25.88. Delia swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.20 for SUNY New Paltz.

Stevens Tech women (3-5) took first place when freshman Emily Woo (Lodi, CA) touched with a time of 1:03.89. Senior Karen O’Shea (Union, NJ) took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:34.27.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s (3-3)swim team began the meet with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay when freshman Kevin Kent (Beacon Falls, CT), sophomore Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY), senior Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA), and sophomore Brendan Lown (Bohemia, NY) swam a time of 1:44.34.

Freshman Jimmy Ireland (Bergen, NY) swam to a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:11.72. Sophomore John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) touched first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.35 and in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59:04 for SUNY New Paltz.

Stevens Tech men (4-4) were led by senior Andy Martz (Bloomingburgh, NY) who swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:52.85 and 50.12, respectively. Freshman Scott Rogers (Baskin Ridge, NJ) took first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.12, and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.30.

The following seniors swam the final home meet of their careers this afternoon: senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) and senior Jeff Melton (Achworth, GA).

The women’s swim team will compete on Saturday January 14, at the RPI Invitational and both the mens and women’s swim teams will travel on January 28, to Cortland for a dual meet.
