SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Falters Against Geneseo

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team dropped their second consecutive conference game this weekend with a 74-53 defeat at the hands of Geneseo.

Junior guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) sparked the SUNY New Paltz offense to open the first half. Driscoll shot four-of-six from behind the arch, in the first half, to give the Hawks a ten-point, 16-6, lead in the first five minutes of the contest. The Knights worked their way back into the affair and posted a nine-point, 37-28, halftime edge. Driscoll finished the first half with 14 points to lead SUNY New Paltz (6-9, 2-6). Sophomore forward Annie Verdino (Yorktown Heights, NY) and sophomore guard Merrissa Wilson (Buffalo, NY) finished with ten and nine points, respectively, for Genseo.

Geneseo (8-6, 3-2) increased their halftime advantage to lead the Hawks 61-45 with five minutes remaining in the closing period. SUNY New Paltz was unable to regain momentum as Geneseo took the win, 74-53. Driscoll led the Hawks with a career-high 22 points, on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-11 from behind the three-point line. Junior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) pitched in with six assists and four steals. Four Knights finished the contest in double figures. Verdino finished with 16 points. Wilson totaled 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Junior guard Kaite Irving (Olean, NY) scored ten for the Knights, while sophomore forward Amanda Haney (Sydney, NY) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will travel to Oneonta on Tuesday, January 24 for a 6:00 pm conference contest.
