Hawks Pummel City College of New York

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team picked up their fourth win of the 2005-2006 with a 70-29 defeat of City College of New York (CCNY). The Beavers fell to 1-9 with the loss.

Behind the play of sophomore forward Sarah Salvo (Monorville, NY) and junior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) the Hawks tripled CCNY’s offensive output, posting a 25-point lead at the half, 37-12. Shooting 21.7% from the field in the first half, CCNY (1-9) struggled on the offensive end. Freshman guard Stephanie Cruz (Brooklyn, NY) led the Beavers with seven points and added two rebounds. Freshman forward Johanna Ortiz (Deer Park, NY) kept CCNY in range grabbing five rebounds in the first half.

SUNY New Paltz (4-5) extended their halftime lead to as many 40 points. The Beavers, however, could not maintain the momentum and SUNY New Paltz was able to come away with the victory. Junior guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) tied a career high, ten points to lead the Hawks, while sophomore forward Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY) recorded eight points and four rebounds. Salvo bettered the career high that she set against CCNY a year prior, totaling 14 points, while grabbing six boards. Kelty pitched in 10 points, four rebounds and eight assists in the win. Ortiz led the City College of New York with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will host SUNY IT on Tuesday, January 10 at 6:00 pm.
