Driscoll and Sohns, Lead Hawks Past Valiants

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team picked up their third win of the 2005-2006 with a 61-46 defeat of Manhattanville College. The Valiants fell to 0-8 with the loss.

Behind the play of junior guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) and sophomore forward Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) the Hawks doubled Manhattanville’s offensive output, posting a 15-point lead at the half, 30-15. Shooting 16% from the field in the first half, Manhattanville (0-8) struggled on the offensive end. Junior guard Kim Reznicek (Dobbs Ferry, NY) led the Valiants with four points and added five rebounds. Freshman forward Lauren Grenier (North Oxford, MA) kept Manhattanville in range grabbing eight rebounds in the first half.

SUNY New Paltz (3-5) extended their halftime lead to as many 28 points, but Manhattanville forced their way back into the contest and cut the lead to only 11 with 5:29 remaining. The Valiants, however, could not maintain the momentum and SUNY New Paltz was able to come away with the victory. Driscoll recorded, a career high, ten points and, tied a career high, six rebounds to lead the Hawks. Sohns totaled 13 points, while grabbing six boards. Junior guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) pitched in eight points, seven rebounds and four assists in the win. Junior center Jazmine Leon (Spring Valley, NY) led Manhattanville with 13 points and seven rebounds. Grenier finished the evening with 12 rebounds, four offensively.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will host the City College of New York on Saturday, January 7 at 1:00 pm.
