Women’s Volleyball Finishes Fourth at the NYSWCAA Tournament

ITHACA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s volleyball team continued play today at the New York State Women?s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Tournament with an impressive fourth place finish. With the fourth place finish, the Hawks surpassed last year?s finish where conference rival Brockport eliminated them in the first round.

In the semifinal round, number six seed SUNY New Paltz met the number two seed and host of the tournament Ithaca College. The Hawks dropped the first game 30-25, the second 30-19, and the third 30-22. Sophomore setter Katie Becofsky (Altamont, NY) tallied twenty assists, while senior middle hitter Christina Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) had eight kills, six blocks, and six digs. Senior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) recorded eight kills and sixteen digs in the loss.

Vying for a third place finish, SUNY New Paltz would meet conference rival Cortland in their last match at the NYSWCAA Tournament. In the first game, the Hawks fought hard, but came up short losing 25-30. The second and third games would be dominated by Cortland, who took victories from the Hawks 30-21 and 30-23. Controlling the offense, Becofsky managed 23 assists and 14 digs. Kaiser once again had a stand out performance collecting nine kills and seventeen digs. Junior right side Kim Clouston (Baldwinsville, NY) led the Hawks with seven kills and sixteen digs.

SUNY New Paltz completed the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament placing fourth out of twelve teams. Both Mazurowski and Kaiser were selected to the All-State first team, and Mazurowski was also selected to the All Championship Tournament Team.
