SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Victorious Over Violets

NEW PALTZ, NY — This afternoon the SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team grabbed their sixth win of 2005 with a 2-1 overtime defeat of New York University.

SUNY New Paltz (6-11) posted a one-goal lead in the first half. In the 18th-minute junior forward Joe Fabian (Selden, NY) dribbled the ball down the right side and lobbed a pass ahead to junior midfielder Brian Siergiej (Oceanside, NY), who gave SUNY New Paltz the 1-0 halftime lead.

Just over six minutes into the second half New York University (8-6-1) evened the score at one, off a Hawk’s turnover. Junior goalkeeper Masanori Hotta (Hyogo, Japan) turned the ball over to senior forward Jake Stolarski (San Antonio, TX), who headed the ball into the goal. After the fortunate turnover the Violets seized control of the second half. New York University out shot the Hawks 15 to four in the second half, but thanks to Hotta and an aggressive Hawk defense the score remained tied at one through the end of regulation.

With 3:56 remaining in the overtime period freshman forward Thomas Libardi (Canaan, NY) followed a lob from Siergiej and tapped it past freshman goalkeeper Chris Wright (Colchester, CT) for the game-winner. Wright made six saves in the loss. Hotta collected six saves as well and his second win of the year.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team will travel on Friday, October 28 to play St. Lawrence University at the University of Albany, scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
