NEW PALTZ — The State University of New York at New Paltz Foundation has announced that Peter Chernek of Newburgh is the grand prizewinner of the $4,350 “Tuition for $10” raffle.
Chernek, a sophomore majoring in math at SUNY New Paltz, bought two tickets for the raffle and was chosen as the winner out of a total of 1,771 tickets sold.
During the course of the six months that the raffle was held, the Foundation raised $5,500, which will go directly to the SUNY New Paltz Recruitment Scholarship Endowment, which allows the college to provide renewable scholarships to incoming students.
Alyssa Moore of Seaford, Long Island, was awarded the second place prize – $1,000 toward an on-campus meal plan, split between the fall and spring semesters, courtesy of Campus Auxiliary Services. Moore is a first-year student majoring in English education.
Eileen Bastien, director of donor relations at SUNY New Paltz, said that the tuition raffle has given the Foundation the opportunity to not only raise additional scholarship money, but also to impact the lives of these two New Paltz students. “We couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion,” said Bastien.
The grand prize drawing took place at noon, Oct. 8, at the SUNY New Paltz Foundation Scholarship brunch.
