SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Edges Elmira In Overtime

KINGSTON, NY — The SUNY New Paltz field Hockey team won their seventh game of the season, this afternoon, defeating Elmira College 3-2 in overtime.

With 5:33 remaining in overtime, SUNY New Paltz (6-10) senior midfielder Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) placed the game-winner past Soaring Eagles goalkeeper Anne Phillips (Lancaster, NY), for her second penalty stroke goal of the evening, giving SUNY New Paltz the 3-2 victory.

The Soaring Eagles tied the game with 2:40 left in regulation when senior midfielder Sarah Dake (Walton, NY) combined with freshman forward Kayla Blank (Whitesboro, NY) for the second time. The Hawks had established a one-goal lead when Wong capitalized on her first penalty stroke with 7:40 remaining on the clock.

In the first half of play, sophomore midfielder Jacqueline Sisco (Wappingers Falls, NY) collected a rebound off a shot from Wong and sent it to the back of the cage to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge. With two and a half minutes remaining in the opening period, Blank tied the affair off a pass from Dake. The Hawks out shot the Elmira (5-10) in the first half six to five.

The Hawks sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Ruggiero (Carmel, NY) made five saves, while Phillips recorded ten saves in the loss for Elmira College.

The following seniors participated in the final home game of their collegiate careers; midfielder Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ), forward Shannon Stokes (Accord, NY) and midfielder Kelly Proper (Red Hook, NY). The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team will travel to William Patterson University on Saturday, October 29, at 1:00 pm.
