SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Team Comes Up Short at Drew

MADISON, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team was defeated at Drew University today, losing 4-2. Though the Hawks made a valiant effort, they were outshot by a margin of seventeen to ten leaving them with their third loss of the season.

Ryan Hoover (Dallas, PA) got Drew University on the board first, scoring at 29:27 on a pass from Becky Steinhilber (Pine Beach, NJ). The Hawks quickly responded with a goal off a solo shot at 21:40, from sophomore forward Ashley Smith (Selden, NY). The Rangers would retaliate with a go-ahead-goal by Jen Schoepflin (Sewell, NJ) at 18:54 on another Steinhilber assist, leaving the Rangers with a comfortable 3-1 lead at the half.

The second half of the game was well matched with both Drew University and SUNY New Paltz scoring. At 22:48 Brittany Westcott (Margate, NJ) aided Schoepflinýs second goal of the game to put the Rangers ahead 4-1. Ashley Smith once again answered back with a score with 8:35 left to play on an assist from Kaitlin Ruggerio (Carmel, NY), to cut the lead to two.

With another stellar performance for the Hawks, junior goalkeeper Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) registered fourteen saves in the loss. Freshman goalkeeper Anne Wallin (Long Valley, NJ) collected three saves for Drew University.
