SUNY New Paltz Tennis Team Women’s Wins Second Straight

NEW PALTZ, NY — For the second straight day the SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team finished the afternoon with a win. The Hawks defeated Union College 9-0.

In singles play freshman Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) defeated sophomore Jennie Werts (New York, NY) 6-1, 6-4 in the first flight. The Hawks swept flights two through six as well. Senior Kerry Farrell won 7-5, 6-2 in number two singles. Freshman Alexandra Goldberg (Scarsdale, NY) took the number three singles 6-1, 6-0. Senior Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY), in her first appearence as a member of the tennis team, won 6-2, 6-0 in number four singles. In the fifth flight, sophomore Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY)came out on top 6-2, 6-0 and in number six singles junior Sara Goldstein (Merrick, NY) won 6-0, 6-2.

The Hawks (8-2) also swept the Dutchwomen (4-11) in doubles play. Yamakawa and Farrell took number one doubles 8-4 over Werts and senior Meg Vercillo (Fayetteville, NY). In number two doubles, Goldberg and Larson won 8-4 and in the third flight of doubles play Fenton and junior Laura Thomas (Hyde Park, NY) also won by a final of 8-4.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team will play at Stevens Tech next Saturday, April 16.
