Hawks Swept By First Place Buffalo State

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team was held to one run and seven hits in dropping a doubleheader at home to conference rival Buffalo State this afternoon.

In game one, Buffalo State senior Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster, NY) pitched a four-hitter to help lead the SUNYAC leading Bengals to a 5-1 win. Scheffold walked two and struck out seven to improve her record to 7-1. Buffalo State got its run production in the second and third innings off SUNY New Paltz freshman Michelle Reinke (St. James, NY). Junior Brooke Matheis (Hamburg, NY) had a two-run single as part of a four-run second for the Bengals. Junior Lindsay Matheis (Hamburg, NY) added a run scoring single in the third to give Buffalo State a five-run cushion. Lindsay Matheis went 3-for-4 to lead Buffalo Stateýs 10-hit attack.

SUNY New Paltz (7-7, 2-4) junior first baseman Liz McPartlan (Huntington Station, NY) was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Hawks. McPartlan touched home in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY).

Reinke pitched all seven innings, walked three and struck out three.

Buffalo State (17-3, 6-2) did its damage in innings two and three in the second game as well and defeated the Hawks 7-0. Brooke Matheis had a two-run single in the second inning to put the Bengals in front 2-0. Two SUNY New Paltz errors in the third helped Buffalo State score four more to hold a 6-0 advantage after three.

Senior Melissa Balsavage (Cheektowaga, NY) walked one and limited the Hawks to just three hits. Freshman Kelly OýHea (Huntington Station, NY) took the loss. She gave up seven runs, five of which were unearned, and 12 hits.

McPartlan and Motzkin were both 2-for-6 in the doubleheader for the Hawks. Brooke Matheis was 3-for-3 with five runs batted in the second game.
