Masterson Earns National Qualifying Spot at SUNYAC Championship

BUFFALO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team claimed two conference championships on the first day of the SUNYAC Championship at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, NY.

Junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) won the 50 freestyle with a national qualifying time of 24.07. Masterson’s effort was a both a SUNYAC Championship record and a SUNY New Paltz record. With that performance, Masterson has earned the right to compete at the NCAA Division III Championship in March.

Sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) captured the 200 IM for the second straight year with a time of 2:14.14.

The effort by Masterson and Delia has helped put the Hawks in fourth place after the first day of competition. With 161 points, the Hawks trail third place Cortland by one point. Oswego is leading the way with 211.5 and Geneseo is in second place with 187.5

The men’s team stands in fifth place after the first day. The Hawks have 92 points and trail fourth Brockport by two points. Geneseo leads the way with 305 points while Oswego is second with 198. Cortland is in third place with 176.

Highlighting the first day of competition for the men’s team was a fifth place finish in the 400 medley relay by senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY), freshman Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY), sophomore Chris Chaplin (Hempstead, NY) and freshman John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY).
