Hawks Return to Win Column

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team ended a six-game losing streak with a 59-41 win over Russell Sage this evening at Elting Gym.

The Hawks used a 17-6 second half run to open up a 42-29 lead with 8:37 to play. Senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) scored six of her team-high 13 points during that surge to help ignite SUNY New Paltz. Weigel was 6-of-8 from the field and added seven rebounds and five steals.

SUNY New Paltz (10-9) led by as many as eight in the first half before Russell Sage outscored the Hawks 8-2 in the final two minutes to head into the intermission in front 25-23.

Sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) was also in double figures and finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists.

With 10 victories, the SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team has reached its highest win total in Brad Duckworth’s three years as head coach.

Russell Sage (4-14) was led by senior guard Connie Kaidas (Scotia, NY) who finished with a game-high 16 points.

The Hawks will face conference rival Oneonta tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in Oneonta, NY.
