Hawks Claim Two More Titles at Conference Championship
NEW PALTZ, NY — For the second consecutive day, junior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) and sophomore Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) captured first place medals at the 2005 SUNYAC Championship in Buffalo, NY.
Masterson won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.22 while Delia was the champion in the 400 IM with a time of 4:42.32. Masterson and Delia also combined with seniors Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) and Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) to earn a third place finish in the 200 medley relay with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 1:51.79. The top-four relay teams in the women’s 200 MR all swam provisional qualifying marks with Oswego earning the top time of 1:50.93.
The 800 free relay team of Lindner, Delia, Masterson and sophomore Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) finished third and established a school-record time of 8:04.83 along the way.
The Hawks maintained their hold on fourth place today. SUNY New Paltz has 352 points and trails third place Cortland by 22 points. Oswego is in first with 483.50 and Geneseo is second with 423.50.
The men’s team climbed one spot in the conference standings and will head into the final day in fourth place as well. The Hawks have 240 points and are 30 ahead of fifth-place Brockport. Geneseo leads the way with 612 points. Oswego and Cortland are second and third with 397 and 363 points respectively.
Freshman Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY) finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.61. In addition, Johnson was a part of the Hawks 200 medley relay team that finished third with a time of 1:38.17. The relay team also featured senior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY), sophomore Chris Chaplin (Hempstead, NY) and senior Ben Yousey (Beaverfalls, NY).
Junior Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA) grabbed sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time 55.11.
