Buffalo State Pulls Away Late To Defeat Hawks

NEW PALTZ, NY — Buffalo State outscored SUNY New Paltz 17-7 in the final four minutes to come away with a 71-62 victory over the Hawks this afternoon at Elting Gym.

Trailing 53-52 with 5:20 to play, freshman guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) sank a jumper to put the Hawks in front 54-53. Driscoll’s basket erased a seven-point SUNY New Paltz deficit three minutes earlier. The Hawks lead was short lived however as junior guard Tawan Slaughter (Buffalo, NY), who had a game-high 22 points, put the Bengals back in front with a basket at the 4:18 mark. Sophomore forward Darnika Moseley (Liverpool, NY) then scored on the Bengals’ next possession to make it 59-55 with 3:53 to play.

Driscoll then countered with a three-pointer to edge the Hawks within a point at 59-58 with 3:34 remaining. The two teams then traded baskets to keep it a one-point game before Slaughter added another basket with 2:22 remaining to make it 63-60.

In the final two minutes, SUNY New Paltz (10-12, 4-9) could not overcome three consecutive turnovers and Buffalo State was 6-of-8 from the line in the final minute to pull away and earn the victory.

Moseley finished 14 with points all of which came in the second half. Junior forward Jacey Brooks (Machias, NY) was also in double figures with 15 points for Buffalo State who is now 9-14 overall and 6-8 in the SUNYAC.

Sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) led SUNY New Paltz with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Sophomore forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) added 13 points and four rebounds. Driscoll had seven points and three rebounds.
