Swimming Teams Finish Fourth at Conference Meet

BUFFALO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up the third and final day at the 2005 SUNYAC Championship in Buffalo, New York late last evening.

Both squads came home with fourth place finishes. The women’s team picked up two more conference championships with junior Joanna Masterson winning her third title in three days. Masterson captured the 100 free relay with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 52.78. Masterson’s performance was a SUNYAC Championship record and for her efforts she was named the Swimmer of the Meet.

Senior Danielle Lindner garnered the SUNYAC title in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.36. Lindner bested teammate Katie Rapp who came in second at 2:13.50.

Senior Mallory Grempel swam an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:28.95 en route to a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke.

The 400 free relay team of Lindner, Masterson, Liz Delia and Ashley Williamson also finished second with an NCAA Division III provisional mark of 3:37.31.

The women’s team finished the meet with 527 points. Oswego captured the title with 718.5 points. Geneseo was second with 641.5 and Cortland was third with 561.

For the men, senior Kent Yeung was named the James Fulton Award winner. The award is given annually to the male swimmer who excels both athletically and academically over a four-year period. Yeung became the second SUNY New Paltz swimmer in the last three years to win the award.

SUNY New Paltz finished the meet with 349 points. Geneseo outdistanced the field with 939. Oswego was second with 611 and Cortland was third with 543.
