Hawks Finish Strong in 69-63 Win Over Manhattanville

NEW PALTZ, NY — Junior guard Maurice Douglas (Brooklyn, NY) drove to the basket and hit a lay up with 2:52 remaining to give SUNY New Paltz a 59-58 lead and the Hawks held off Manhattanville College for a 69-63 win this afternoon at Elting Gym.

Douglas scored six of his 16 points in the final 2:52 help the Hawks even their record at 5-5. The Hawks had four players score in double figures and were led by sophomore guard John Hauser (East Williston, NY) who had 18 points including two critical free throws with 30 seconds remaining to give SUNY New Paltz 68-63 lead.

Manhattanville (6-6) took a 56-52 lead with 5:39 remaining on a lay up by freshman guard Donte Chisholm (Mount Vernon). Sophomore guard Tony Cannon (New York, NY) then scored the next five points and hit a three-point field goal with 3:40 to play, giving SUNY New Paltz a 57-56 lead. The Valients held their final lead at the 3:15 mark when freshman forward Davon Jackson (New York, NY) stole the ball and drove the length of the floor to make it 58-57.

The Hawks, playing their first game in a week, came out strong and led by as many as 16 in the first half. A three-point play by Douglas put SUNY New Paltz in front 25-9 with nine minutes remaining in the half. Manhattanville responded with a 23-7 run over the next six minutes to tie the score at 32 with 3:16 remaining. The Hawks hit two free throws in the final three minutes of the half to lead 34-32 at the break.

Manhattanville freshman guard Rich Riss (Tarrytown, NY) led all scorers with 26 points and was 6-of-9 from three-point range. Cannon finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
