Hawks Down St. Joseph’s To Extend Winning Streak
NEW PALTZ, NY — SUNY New Paltz sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY), who earlier this afternoon was named the SUNYAC Player of the Week, scored 15 points and dished out six assists to lead the Hawks to a 59-43 non-conference win over St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn this evening at Elting Gym.
Kelty led three Hawks (9-4) in double figures to help SUNY New Paltz extended its winning streak to six. Senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) finished with 11 points and senior forward Tarah Norris (Port Jervis, NY) added 10 points and six rebounds.
Tied at 21 at the break, the Hawks scored the first eight points of the second half and Norris capped the 8-0 run with a basket at the 16-minute mark. SUNY New Paltz dug in defensively as well holding St. Joseph’s to two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half while building a 36-29 lead. Kelty then sank a three-pointer with 9:31 to play giving SUNY New Paltz a 39-29 lead. Weigel would put the Hawks in front by 14 with a basket at the 7:20 mark to extend the advantage to 45-31.
St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn (5-10) was led by AnnaMarie Ciorciari who had 11 points and seven rebounds. Kaitlin O’Neil finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
