Hawks Coast Past Bard in Consolation Game

NEWBURGH, NY — Fresh off a 72-56 conference win over SUNY IT last evening, SUNY New Paltz opened up a double-digit lead in the first five minutes and cruised to a 70-46 win over Bard in the consolation game of the Hudson Valley Shootout this evening at Mount St. Mary.

Sophomore forward John Hauser (East Williston, NY) put the Hawks ahead 15-5 with a lay up at the 15-minute mark. SUNY New Paltz led by as many as 16 on three separate occasions in the first half and took a 40-24 lead at the break.

In his first start of the season, sophomore guard Stephon Cherry (Bronx, NY) was 8-of-10 from the floor with 20 points and 10 rebounds and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Hauser finished with 10 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Matt Irwin (Brooklyn, NY) followed up a career-high 16-point effort against SUNY IT last evening with 10 points and six assists.

Junior guard Maurice Douglas (Brooklyn, NY) added 11 points off the bench to help the Hawks improve to 3-2 on the year.

Adam Turner scored a game-high 22 points for Bard (1-3) and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Vassar won the championship with a 95-83 win over Mount St. Mary.

SUNY New Paltz will play the first of back-to-back conference road games on Friday night at Fredonia at 8:00 p.m. The Hawks will follow that up with a 4:00 p.m. tip-off at Buffalo State on Saturday.
