Hawks Hold Off Manhattanville in Season Opener

PITTSFORD, NY — Senior guard Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) scored 15 points to help SUNY New Paltz prevail 62-61 in its season opener against Manhattanville College in the opening round of the Ramada Inn Invitational at St. John Fisher College.

Weigel scored eight straight points down the stretch to preserve the win. She also had eight rebounds and three assists to send the Hawks into Saturday’s championship game against host St. John Fisher. The Cardinals moved into the title game following a 90-25 win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Sophomore guard Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) also finished in double figures for the Hawks (1-0) with 10 points. Freshman forward Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) added nine points, seven rebounds and six assists in her collegiate debut.

Manhattanville (0-1) was led by Kim Reznicek who had 14 points. The Valiants will meet Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
