Hawks Drop Season Opener at NYU

NEW YORK, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s basketball team fell 93-67 to New York University in the opening game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon.

The Violets used a 9-0 surge early in the first half to build a 19-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining. The Violets, who shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half, led by as many as 16 on four occasions and took a 40-29 lead at the break. NYU (1-0) maintained a double figure lead throughout the second half to move into tomorrow’s title game at 3:00 p.m. against either Nazareth or Washington & Lee.

Junior guard Maurice Douglas (Brooklyn, NY) scored 17 points in 23 minutes off the bench for SUNY New Paltz. Sophomore guard Matt Irwin (Brooklyn, NY) added 12 points and sophomore forward Amseshem Foluke-Henderson (Jamaica, NY) finished with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Jared Kildare led the Violets with 28 points and was 12-of-15 from the field.

SUNY New Paltz (0-1) will play in tomorrow’s consolation game at 1:00 p.m.
