Sixth-Ranked Montclair St. Edges SUNY New Paltz

KINGSTON, NY — Sixth-ranked Montclair State hit SUNY New Paltz with two goals midway through the second half to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Hawks this evening.

Trailing 1-0 with 21 minutes to left, junior forward Alexandria Kelly fired a shot from five-yards out past sophomore goalie Nicole Kovac (Manlius, NY) to even the score. Kelly’s goal was the first scored upon Kovac and the SUNY New Paltz defense in 191 minutes. Less than three minutes later, the Red Hawks were back on the attack and freshman forward Jennifer Tanis gave them the lead with an unassisted goal.

Montclair State outshot SUNY New Paltz 8-2 in the second half to improve their record to 11-2.

In a first half that saw SUNY New Paltz hold a 7-3 advantage on penalty corners, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead with 16 minutes remaining when junior forward Shannon Stokes (Accord, NY) tapped a pass to junior forward Patricia Erikson (Massapequa Park, NY) who scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Kovac finished the game with six saves. Junior goalie Robyn Apicelli made five stops for Montclair State.

The Hawks (5-8) will host SUNY Cortland on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The two teams are 3-1 in the SUNYAC and tied for first in the league standings.
