Oswego Edges SUNY New Paltz Women’s Soccer Team, 1-0

NEW PALTZ, NY — Senior midfielder Jolene Hathaway (Elizabethtown, NY) struck a header past SUNY New Paltz senior goalie Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) in the 56th minute to lift the Oswego women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Hawks this afternoon.

The goal was the first scored against Fenton and Hawks defense in just over 394 minutes. Although Oswego (4-6-2, 2-4-1) finally broke through in the second half, the Lakers peppered Fenton with six shots in the first 45 minutes, but came up empty.

After Hathaway’s goal, the Hawks had some chances as well. With under 10 minutes to play, sophomore midfielder Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) had two solo rushes at the net. Each time, however, freshman goalie Ashlee Distin (Fulton, NY) was able to scoop up the ball before Kelty could make a solid strike. SUNY New Paltz (5-6-3, 3-3-2) kept the pressure on in the last five minutes, but the Laker defense was able to withstand the aggressive Hawk attack to secure the 1-0 conference win.

The Hawks will conclude their conference schedule this Wednesday, Oct. 13th, at 4:00 p.m. when they will host SUNY IT.
