OSWEGO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team fell victim to two well- pitched games by conference rival Oswego this afternoon. The Hawks, who came into the game with a .316 team batting average, were held to two runs and 10 hits in a doubleheader loss to the Lakers.
SUNY New Paltz (8-16, 2-4) lost the opener 4-2 and fell 6-0 in the second game.
In game one, SUNY New Paltz rallied after falling behind 4- 0. The Hawks pushed home two in the top of the sixth to cut the Lakers lead to 4-2. Sophomore catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) had an RBI single in the inning and two Laker errors helped SUNY New Paltz cut the deficit in half. Oswego’s Mike Baca came on with two out and two on in the inning to retire the side and preserve the lead. With the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh, Baca got sophomore center fielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsburg, MD) to ground into a double play to end the game.
Freshman Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) took the loss in his third start of the season. Sophomore Greg Vignoli (Commack, NY) pitched two and a third innings of three-hit, shutout ball in relief.
Sophomore left fielder Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) had three hits in four trips to the plate for the Hawks.
In the second game, Oswego’s Steve Morey went the distance, allowed five hits and struck out six to help the Lakers (6- 8, 2-2) register the shutout win. First baseman Jordan Seigman went 2-for-4 and homered in the second inning to put Oswego in front 3-0.
Freshman third baseman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) went 2- for-4 for SUNY New Paltz. McAdams was 1-for-4 and went 4- for-8 in the doubleheader.
