SUNY New Paltz Softball Team Sweeps Maine Maritime

FORT PIERCE, FL — The SUNY New Paltz softball team opened the 2004 season with a doubleheader sweep of Maine Maritime this afternoon. The Hawks won the opener 6-4 and followed that up with a 12-7 win in the second game.

In game one, the Hawks took advantage of six Maine Maritime errors and scored six unearned runs off Lady Mariners’ starter Janice Spear. SUNY New Paltz erased a 4-2 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning. Five different Hawks collected hits and second baseman Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ) and centerfielder Amy O’Brien (LaGrangeville, NY) each had an RBI.

Laura Thomas (Bay Shore, NY) picked up the win in her SUNY New Paltz debut. She went seven innings and allowed one earned run and nine hits. Spear surrendered just five hits and did not walk a batter.

In the second game, shortstop Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in to help lead the Hawks to the victory. Freshman Carrie Briscoe (Stuyvesant, NY) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and pitched seven innings to pick up her first collegiate win.

SUNY New Paltz will continue its Florida trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Nyack at 6 p.m.
