New Paltz Baseball Team Drops Doubleheader to # 6 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team’s losing streak extended to seven games with losses in both games of a doubleheader against sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins University this afternoon. The Hawks fell 11-1 in the opener and were defeated 10-5 in the second game. Johns Hopkins improved to 3-0 on the season.

In game one, New Paltz trailed 2-0 after two innings but cut the deficit in half in the third inning when junior designated hitter Blake Crocitto (Lake George, NY) stroked a single to right field to drive home sophomore centerfielder Vinnie McAdams (Little Falls, NY). John Hopkins responded by scoring one run in each of the next three innings and put the game out of reach when they exploded for six runs in the eighth inning to take an 11-1 lead.

Freshman rightfielder George Perry (Port Jervis, NY) and freshman leftfielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) each had two hits for the Hawks.

In game two, the Hawks fell behind 4-0 after two innings but scored a run in the third to make it 4-1 and tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the fourth inning. Perry had the big hit with a two-run double to centerfield.

New Paltz grabbed a 5-4 lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning when senior second baseman Silvestre Castro (New York, NY) doubled down the leftfield line to drive in sophomore catcher Eric Velazquez (Chestnut, NY). The lead was short lived as Johns Hopkins scored six runs in the bottom of the inning en route to the 10-5 win.

Perry went 4-for-6 with two RBI’s and a run in the two games.

New Paltz heads to Fort Pierce, Florida for their annual spring break trip where they will play 10 games over eight days. Their first day of competition is on Friday, March 12th when they play Simpson College at 8:45 am and Geneva College at 6:00 pm.
