New Paltz Baseball Team Swept in Doubleheader by # 23 Mary Washington College

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks baseball team was swept in a doubleheader, 4-3 and 17-7, by the twenty-third ranked Mary Washington College Eagles this afternoon. The Hawks dropped to 0-5 while the Eagles upped their record to 11-1.

In game one, freshman pitcher Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) threw a complete game with five strikeouts but Mary Washington scored three runs in the first inning en route to the victory. Freshman shortstop John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and sophomore catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) scored two runs. Mary Washington’s Robbie Wright went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Head coach Mike Juhl was pleased with his team’s effort as he said “that he couldn’t ask for anything more and we played extremely well against a top 20 team.”

New Paltz came out swinging in game two as they pushed home four runs in the first two innings and held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Eagles’ bats started to heat up. Mary Washington scored six runs in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead but the Hawks sliced the deficit to 9-7 with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles replied with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 17-7 lead, which proved to be the final score.

DeKams continued to swing a hot bat as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI’s while sophomore centerfielder Vinnie McAdams (Little Falls, NY) collected three hits, including a double, with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Mary Washington got three hits apiece from Eric Fitzgerald and Lee Rubin. Rubin also collected a game-high five RBI’s.

New Paltz returns the diamond on Sunday, March 7th when they play a doubleheader at sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins University. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
