SUNY New Paltz Swimming Teams Earn a Split against Cortland

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams earned a split against Cortland in a dual meet this afternoon. The men lost 112-83 to fall to 2-3 on the season and the Red Dragons upped their record to 6-2. The women remained perfect in dual meets with a 5-0 record with their 114-91 victory. Cortland now stands at 4-4.

On the men’s side, junior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) led the way with a pair of victories. He captured the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.18 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:18.16. He also swam to second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.07.

The Hawks finished first in three other individual events. Senior Todd Doornweerd (Meriden, CT) won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.60, senior Mark Costello (Staten Island, NY) won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.33 and senior Jon Sousa (Albany, NY) placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.51.

The foursome of Costello, Doornweerd, junior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) and sophomore Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA) were victorious in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:56.06.

The women’s team had a trio of swimmers win two individual events. Freshman Nevine Roberts (Pound Ridge, NY) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:18.97 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:37.26. Junior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.59 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:14.27. Sophomore Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) rounded out the double-winners with victories in the 50-yard freestyle (25.28) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.69).

The Hawks also won the 400-yard freestyle relay with the quartet of Lindner, Roberts, Masterson and freshman Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) in a time of 3:45.32.

New Paltz returns to the pool when they host Stevens Tech on Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 pm.
