SUNY New Paltz Men’s Soccer Team Falls 3-0 to Cortland in SUNYAC Tournament
CORTLAND, NY — The sixth seeded Hawks of SUNY New Paltz lost, 3-0, to third seeded Cortland in a 2003 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men’s soccer quarterfinal game this afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons advanced to the semifinals where they will play the second seeded Knights of Geneseo at the Hall of Fame Fields in Oneonta on Friday, November 7th at 1:30 pm.
Junior Christian Peters (Wesel, Germany) put Cortland (13-4-2) on the scoreboard at the 7:17 mark when he scored the first of his two goals. Freshman Dan Dunn (Warwick, NY) had his shot blocked by a Hawk defender and Peters retrieved the loose ball and blasted a 15-yard shot past New Paltz junior goalkeeper Brendan Morris (Hopewell Junction, NY).
The Red Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute when junior Matt Daum (New Paltz, NY) scored off a free kick from senior Brian Dermody (Port Washington, NY). New Paltz (6-8-2) had a few scoring chances, including two by senior Mario Lavacca (Port Washington, NY) in the first half, but weren’t able to capitalize.
Cortland ended the scoring at the 67:09 mark when Peters notched his second goal of the game from an assist by junior Chad Becker (Rochester, NY).
Morris made three saves for the Hawks while Cortland sophomore goalkeeper Sean Trask (Alplaus, NY) stopped five shots in the win.
