NEW PALTZ — Nobel laureate Toni Morrison will be at the State University of New York at New Paltz at 7 p.m. (admission at 6:30 p.m.) on Tuesday, Nov. 18, in the Julien J. Studley Theatre. Morrison will be reading from her new book, “Love,” will answer questions from the audience and conduct a book signing.
The event is sponsored by Ariel Booksellers and hosted by SUNY New Paltz. Tickets are on sale at Ariel Booksellers in the Village of New Paltz for $26, which includes a copy of the new book, “Love.” Admission is free for the first 150 SUNY New Paltz students at the door of the theatre with valid student identification. These students do not get a copy of the book.
Morrison was born in 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, and at an early age she displayed an interest in literature. She has studied humanities at Howard and Cornell universities, followed by an academic career at Texas Southern University, Howard University, Yale, and since 1989, a chair at Princeton University.
Morrison has also worked as a critic, an editor for Random House, and has given numerous public lectures, specializing in African-American literature. According to the Nobel e-museum Web site, she made her debut as a novelist in 1970, soon gaining the attention of both critics and a wider audience for her epic power, unerring ear for dialogue, and her poetically-charged and richly-expressive depictions of Black America.
A member since 1981 of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, she has been awarded a number of literary distinctions, among them the Pulitzer Prize in 1988.
