NEW PALTZ, NY — Senior forward Mario Lavacca s (Port Washington, NY) two goals led SUNY New Paltz to a 2-1 victory over the defending conference champion, Cortland Red Dragons, this afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, Lavacca opened up the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 46th minute and notched his second goal of the game two minutes later on an assist by freshman midfielder Joe Fabian (Selden, NY). Cortland tried to mount a comeback when freshman forward Bo Grechka (Owego, NY) scored in the 62nd minute on an assist by junior midfielder Aaron Capano (Hyde Park, NY). The Red Dragons were unable to pull even thanks to junior goalkeeper Brendan Morris (Hopewell Junction, NY) who had four saves in the game, including two in the final 15 minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Trask (Alplaus, NY) had eight saves for Cortland.
