SUNY New Paltz Men s and Women s Swimming Teams Split With Hartwick

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams opened up the 2003-2004 season with a split decision against Hartwick College this afternoon.

Junior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:11.20 and junior Danielle Linder (Wantagh, NY) won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.12 to propel the Hawks to a 119-86 victory against Hartwick for the first time ever.

With the meet tied at 94 going into the last men’s race, Hartwick’s 200 freestyle relay team of Kurt Cedo (Breezy Point, NY), Chris Diekhans (Wapakoneta, OH), Jared Schwarting (Weedsport, NY) and Ryan Olsen (Plattsburgh, NY) beat New Paltz by a touch with a time of 1:32.04 to win the meet 105-100.

New Paltz junior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY) won the 100 backstroke by two hundredths of a second over Cedo in 55:06. Jon Sousa (Albany, NY) won the 200 IM for the Hawks as well with a time of 2:04.18 and the 100 fly in 54:83.

SUNY New Paltz Highlights vs. Hartwick

Men- Freshman Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ) made his debut for the Hawks by taking fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.31 and by placing second in the 200 medley relay along with Mark Costello (Staten Island, NY), Jeff Melton (Acworth, GA) and Craig Gottesman (Oceanside, NY).

Women- Joanna Masterson (Canadaigua, NY) won the 50 freestyle in 25.45 and took second in the 100 freestyle in 56.07.
