New Paltz Women’s Tennis Team Has Tough Time in Singles Play at NYSWCAA Tournament

ITHACA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team had six players participating in the Hawks first ever appearance at the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) tournament but only one of the six advanced into the second round of the singles competition.

Junior Amie Larson (Port Jervis, NY) was the lone winner for New Paltz as she defeated Danielle Kocher of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 in the number four singles flight. She will play Sara Feikert of Cortland in the second round on Saturday morning.

In the number one singles flight, junior co-captain Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre, NY) was defeated by Kaitie Donovan of Hamilton, 6-1, 6-0.

Junior Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY) was eliminated in the number two singles flight, 6-0, 6-0 by the number one seed, Tara Pajoohi of the University of Rochester.

Sophomore Sara Goldstein (Merrick, NY) lost to top-seeded Debbie Sharnak of Vassar, 6-0, 6-0, in the number three singles flight.

In the number five singles flight, freshman Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY) put up a valiant effort but fell in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, to New York University’s Carol Young.

Junior Jessica Smith (Newport News, VA) was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by top-seeded Anna Will of Vassar in the number six singles flight.
