Women’s Soccer falls to Manhattanville, 3-1, in Season Opener

NEW PALTZ, NY — Freshman forward Allison Fliegel (New Hyde Park, NY) scored the lone goal for New Paltz in a 3-1 season-opening loss at Manhattanville this afternoon.

The Valiants (1-1-0) jumped on the scoreboard first at the 9:00 mark when Jennifer Okun (Harrison, NY) headed the ball past the Hawks junior goalkeeper Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY). Amanda Bunonomo (Westbury, NY) garnered the assist when her shot caromed off a Hawks defender and went directly to Okun.

New Paltz (0-1-0) fell behind 2-0 when Stephanie Ditaronto (Flushing, NY) scored at 34:20 off a feed from Stephanie Rein (Lynbrook, NY). Just over four minutes later, Fliegel cut the deficit in half on a breakaway goal at 38:30.

Each team displayed their offensive prowess throughout the second half but only Manhattanville was able to capitalize when Rein found the back of the net at the 74:00 mark to finish off the scoring.

Fenton made three saves and Manhattanville goalkeeper Michelle Ribiero (West Hartford, CT) stopped seven shots.

New Paltz plays their home opener against Ramapo College on Wednesday, September 10 at 4:30 pm.
