Fifth Ranked Cortland Field Hockey Team Defeats New Paltz, 8-1

KINGSTON, NY — Junior forward Ashley Ostrander (Whitney Point, NY) and freshman forward Kelli Johnson (Elma, NY) each scored three goals to lead fifth ranked Cortland to an 8-1 win over SUNY New Paltz this afternoon.

Ostrander also assisted on a goal for Cortland who improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference.

The Red Dragons took control of the game midway through the first half and built a 3-0 lead in the 21st minute on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Molly Brown (Liverpool, NY). Cortland, who owned an 18-1 advantage in first half shots, increased its lead to 4-0 with two minutes left in the half on a goal by senior midfielder Melissa Heyde (Somers, NY). Ostrander and Johnson each scored twice in the second half for Cortland who owns a 4-0 advantage over the Hawks in the all-time series.

New Paltz (2-6, 0-3) broke up the Red Dragons bid for a shutout with 4:20 remaining in the game when sophomore attack Patricia Erikson (Massapequa Park, NY) deflected in a shot from the top of the circle by sophomore midfielder Lisa Wong (Colts Neck, NJ).
