NEW PALTZ, NY — Playing their first match in nine days, the SUNY New Paltz women s tennis team defeated Montclair State 8-1 this afternoon to remain undefeated in dual match play.
At number one singles, junior Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre, NY) rebounded from a 6-7 loss in the second set to win 6-4, 6-7, 6-0 over Paola Alexandres (Bernardsville, NJ). Senior Becky Sparacin recovered from a 4-6 loss in the first set of her number two singles match to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 over sophomore Eva Salierno (Clifton, NJ). New Paltz, who won five of the six singles flights, also received straight set victories at number four, five, six by junior Amie Larson (Port Jervis, NY), freshman Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY), and junior Jessica Smith (Newport News, VA).
The Hawks (6-0) swept doubles play behind a 9-8 victory from the number three team of freshman Kim Barnwell (Beacon, NY) and Smith. Barnwell and Smith won a thrilling 12-10, tie breaker to give the Hawks all three doubles points.
Montclair State picked its lone point at number three singles when sophomore Ashley Tomesko (Clifton, NJ) defeated junior Amanda Rosario (Bronx, NY) 6-1, 6-0. New Paltz avenged a 6-3 loss to the Red Hawks (2-4) last season.
