New Paltz Softball Team Ends Long Losing Streak

HIGHLAND, NY – — The SUNY New Paltz softball team ended a 51-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over conference rival Oswego in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon at Tony Williams Park.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks scored twice in the inning to pick up their first win since March 28, 2002. Sophomore catcher Danielle Zakrzewski (Flushing, NY) drove home the winning run with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore designated hittter Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY). Schropfer was responsible for the game-tying RBI with a single that scored pinch runner Wendy Del Orbe (Brooklyn, NY).

Senior pitcher Kristin Ackermann (Middletown, NY) picked up the victory for New Paltz. Ackerman went seven innings and allowed two earned runs while walking four and striking out three.

Schropfer was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder Jen Born (Walworth, NY) went 2-for-3 and drove in two for New Paltz.

In game two, Oswego scored one in the first, three in the second and four in the third, for an 8-0 win. Freshman pitcher Susie Burt (Cuba, NY), who suffered the loss in game one, pitched a two-hit shutout for her first collegiate win.

Freshman catcher Missy Constanza (Hannibal, NY) went 2-for- 2 with three runs batted in as Oswego (1-10, 1-8) picked up its first victory of the season. Sophomores Samantha Edwards (Watervliet, NY) and Kristen Fusco (Lancaster, NY) each went 2-for-3 with two RBI off New Paltz starter Born who dropped to 0-6.

New Paltz is now 1-19 overall and 1-10 in the SUNYAC.
