NEW PALTZ — One of the best known sportswriters in the country will keynote this year’s media day, an all-day conference on Saturday, May 3, where practicing communication and media professionals, including several alumni, will come to share their knowledge and experiences with current and prospective students and the public.
The second annual media day, “Media Magnetism: A Day with the Pros,” is being sponsored by the State University of New York at New Paltz chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists and the Department of Communication and Media.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Coykendall Science Building Auditorium and will continue until 5 p.m. It is open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be served.
Roger Kahn, famous baseball writer who most notably penned “The Boys of Summer,” heads the list of speakers. Kahn will give a speech titled, “Money, Muscle and Myth: Why the Sporting Press Always Gets It Wrong.” He will also discuss recent baseball stories in relation to press coverage.
Other speakers include Carrie Jacobson, art director for The Middletown Times Herald-Record, Pulitzer Prize winner Bernard Stein, editor of The Riverdale Press, Mike Levine, executive editor of The Times Herald-Record, and Nancy Peckenham, formerly of CNN.
The event will also feature an alumni panel where New Paltz graduates from the communication and media program will talk about their post-college experiences. Guests will be given the opportunity to ask them questions and speak with them one-on-one throughout the day.
Also featured will be The Communication and Media Department’s Day of Student Presentations, where students from different areas of the department will present their research and creative work.
