Baseball Ups SUNYAC Record To 4-2 With Sweep Of Plattsburgh

SARANAC, NY — The New Paltz men’s baseball team improved its SUNYAC record to 4-2 on Sunday with a sweep of Plattsburgh. The Hawks won game one 10-6 and crushed the Cards 16-3 in game two.

The first game saw New Paltz plate five runs in the second inning on an error and four walks before the Cards got back into the game with two runs in both the second and third innings. After New Paltz stretched the lead to 7-4 with single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Hawks put the game away with three runs in the seventh due to two costly Plattsburgh errors.

Silvester Castro (New York, NY) was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI and Phil Scaglione (Stony Point, NY) was 2-for-3 with two runs. Andrew Raphael (Brooklyn, NY) picked up his first win of the season throwing a complete game. Raphael gave up six runs on ten hits and struck out four batters.

In game two, the Hawks scored 13 runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings en route to a 16-3 win. Shortstop Tom Bigler (Brewster, NY) gave New Paltz the quick lead in the Hawks’ second at bat of the game with a solo homerun. Bigler would add his second in the sixth inning, finishing the game with five RBI.

Matt Zajdel (Agwam, MA) got his first homerun of the season with a solo shot and Sean Wachter (Miller Place, NY) hit his first with a six-inning grand slam.

Bigler, Castro, and Randy Walters (Collierville, TN) each had three hits apiece in the game. Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY), Kevin Smith (Niskayuna, NY), and Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) added two hits each.

Rich Bizelia (Massapequa, NY) picked up the victory on the hill for the Hawks surrendering three runs on ten hits.

The Hawks are at Western New England Tuesday at 3:30 before returning to Loren Campbell Field Wednesday for a doubleheader with RPI at 2:00 p.m.
